FIBER,OPTIC

A single nonjacketed nonmetallic flexible conductor consisting of a core of transparent dielectric material surrounded by a cladding material of lower refractive index. The item may or may not have a protective coating (buffer). It is specifically designed to conduct light from one point or location to another, and is primarily intended for use in data or image transmission, control, communication and indicating applications. It may also be used to transmit light for illumination purposes. For items with a protective jacket see CABLE, FIBER OPTIC.

CABLE,FIBER OPTIC

One or more individually jacketed FIBER, OPTIC contained in a common covering or two or more FIBER, OPTIC molded together but separated from each other. It may also contain one or more insulated electrical conductors. It is intended for use in data transmission and communication, control, and indicating circuits. It refers to bulk quantities only. For items of definite length with polished ends, cleaved ends and/or the ends terminated with a fitting, see CABLE ASSEMBLY, FIBER OPTIC.

An item consisting of a CABLE ASSEMBLY (as modified) and a REEL, CABLE. Designed to facilitate rapid interconnection of dispersed electrical and/or electronic components and for cable storage during transit.

CABLE ASSEMBLY,FIBER OPTIC

A definite continuous length of CABLE, FIBER OPTIC having both ends cleaved, optically ground and polished and/or terminated in fittings which provide for connection to other items. Excludes items having branches or forks. Excludes CABLE ASSEMBLY, SINGLE BUNDLE, FIBER OPTIC. See also WIRING HARNESS, FIBER OPTIC.

CABLE ASSEMBLY,FIBER OPTIC,BRANCHED

A definite continuous length of CABLE, FIBER OPTIC with branches (forks) and having each end cleaved, optically ground and polished and/or terminated in fittings which provide for connection to other items. See also WIRING HARNESS, FIBER OPTIC, BRANCHED.

CABLE ASSEMBLY,SINGLE BUNDLE,FIBER OPTIC

A definite continuous length of CABLE, SINGLE BUNDLE, FIBER OPTIC, each end being optically ground and terminated by a lens or a fitting such as an eyelet or ferrule.

WIRING HARNESS,FIBER OPTIC

An item consisting of two or more single conductors CABLE, FIBER OPTIC of a definite length, held together by lacing cord, metal bands, or similar type binding. The individual conductors may be identified by color or by alphabetic or numeric codes or symbols. The item may include fittings which provide for connection to other items. Excludes items which are branched, forked, sleeved, or contained in a common covering.

TETHER,POWERED

A cord that provides an electrical, mechanical and/or optical link between a ground system and an aerostat.

SWITCH,FIBER OPTIC

A device designed for re-routing signals from one optical source into others, or to change the logic state of another device, through light activation, electro-mechanical, photo-electric or analog controls.

SWITCH ASSEMBLY,FIBER OPTIC

Two or more SWITCH, FIBER OPTIC mounted on a common mounting, which is primarily designed to hold the switches. Each SWITCH, FIBER OPTIC must be capable of functioning independently. For switch assemblies that include electronic switches, see SWITCH, ASSEMBLY.

REPEATER,LIGHT SIGNAL

An item designed to receive, amplify electronically, and retransmit an optically modulated signal at an intermediate point in a long line. It may be self-contained with respect to power supply.

TRANSMITTER,LIGHT SIGNAL

A device specifically designed to convert digital and/or analog input electrical signals to output light signals containing the same data for transmission over an optical conductor. Excludes items generating light for illumination purposes only. Excludes devices that would transmit light signals thru a media other than fiber optic conductor such as TRANSMITTER, INFRARED.

RECEIVER,LIGHT SIGNAL

A receiver used for reception of light signals transmitted through an optical conductor. It converts the input to an electronic output signal. Excludes devices that would receive light signals thru a media other than fiber optic conductor such as RECEIVER, INFRARED.

SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICE ASSEMBLY

A grouping of two or more semiconducting devices such as LIGHT EMITTING DIODE; SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICE, DIODE; SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICE, PHOTO; SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICE, THYRISTOR; and/or TRANSISTOR mounted on a common mounting or mounted on each other. The devices must be separable and each item must be capable of functioning in accordance with its given name. For assemblies consisting of semiconducting devices permanently cased, encapsulated, or potted together to form a single unit, see RECTIFIER, SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICE, UNITIZED and SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICES, UNITIZED. A device for reducing the strength of light signals transmitted through an optical conductor continuously without causing appreciable distortion.

CHOPPER,LIGHT SIGNAL

A device for interrupting a beam of light at regular intervals in a fiber optic system.

DEMODULATOR,LIGHT SIGNAL

A device which operates on a carrier wave to recover the light signal for which the carrier was originally modulated.

DEMULTIPLEXER,LIGHT SIGNAL

An item designed to decombine two or more simultaneous intelligence siganls for recovering the intelligence received from a single light signal transmission facility, the intelligence having been previously combined by a compatible light signal multiplexer. See also MULTIPLEXER, LIGHT SIGNAL.

A device to attenuate a perticular wavelength light signal while passing others on with relatively no change.

A device designed to align an optical fiber within an optical connector.

An item designed to be attached to the body of a LIGHT PIPE, FIBER OPTIC or light pipe, fiber optic, branched. it must include all necessary mounting hardware to complete attachment to a light pipe.

MODULATOR,LIGHT SIGNAL

A device primarily designed to vary the frequency of a light signal transmitter to which it is directly connected.

MULTIPLEXER,LIGHT SIGNAL

An item designed to combine two or more simultaneous intelligence signals for transmission over an optical conductor.

PHASE SHIFTER,LIGHT SIGNAL

An item specifically designed to induce a fixed or variable phase shift to a light signal from 0 to 360 degrees.

RECEIVER-TRANSMITTER,LIGHT SIGNAL

A signal component capable of performing the function of a RECEIVER, LIGHT SIGNAL and a TRANSMITTER, LIGHT SIGNAL.

MODEM,FIBER OPTIC

A device which accepts optic signals and converts them to electrical or radio frequency. It accommodates voltage and optics and is immune to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) that is generated. It connects data terminal equipment to a fiber optic transmission line or network.

FILTER SET,LIGHT SIGNAL

A combination of at least two identical or different FILTER, LIGHT SIGNAL which attentuates a light signal of a certain wave length or lets through light signals of other wave lengths relatively unchanged.

MULTIPLEXER SUBASSEMBLY,LIGHT SIGNAL

Two or more different types of items having a common mounting or mounted on each other, which together form a portion of a MULTIPLEXER, LIGHT SIGNAL, but which in itself is not a complete functioning item and cannot be assigned a more definite item name.

HOUSING,ISOLATORS,OPTICALLY COUPLED

A housing specifically designed with radio frequency interference cavities to enclose isolator modules. Signals are transferred between modules in each cavity by means of fiber optic light guides. May be rack mounted, wall mounted, or free standing.

RECEIVER SUBASSEMBLY,LIGHT SIGNAL

Two or more different types of items having a common mounting or mounted on each other which together form a portion of a RECEIVER, LIGHT SIGNAL.

MODEM ASSEMBLY,FIBER OPTIC

Two or more MODEM, FIBER OPTIC (42526) having a common mounting or mounted on each other.

CONVERTER,FIBER OPTIC

An electronic device that converts single-mode optical interface to multimodes optical or vice versa. It can extend the distance of the optical signal due to the technical capacities of the single-mode optical fiber.

LASER DIODE,FIBER OPTIC

A two electrode solid state, optoelectronic device that emits coherent visible or infrared radiant energy with a narrow beam and a narrow spectral bandwidth when electrically energized. It is designed for use in a fiber optic system. May or may not include mounting hardware and/or heat sink. See also LIGHT EMITTING DIODE.

ILLUMINATOR,FIBER OPTIC

An item specifically designed to serve as a light source for a LIGHT PIPE, FIBER OPTIC or a LIGHT PIPE, FIBER OPTIC BRANCHED.

LIGHT PIPE,FIBER OPTIC

An assembly of a number of optical fibers contained in common covering used for illumination and/or image transmission. For items designed for communication and/or data transmission see CABLE, SINGLE BUNDLE, FIBER OPTIC.

LIGHT PIPE,FIBER OPTIC,BRANCHED

An assembly of a number of optical fibers contained in a common covering with branches (forks) used for illumination and/or image transmission. For items designed for communication and/or data transmission see CABLE, SINGLE BUNDLS, FIBER OPTIC.

LIGHT PIPE,LIQUID

An item made of a thin-wall plastic pipe filled with a liquid light transmission medium and coated with a black, flexible material. The ends are sealed with a glass rod facilitating light emergence and providing such a tight seal that the liquid cannot escape. They are designed to accommodate devices such as the ILLUMINATOR, FIBER OPTIC.

CHAMBER,CABLE TERMINAL

An item specifically designed to admit, protect and seal conductor groups or cables and also affords a method of conveniently distributing, terminating and interconnecting the leads.

CLAMP,CABLE,FIBER OPTIC CONNECTOR

A clamp specifically designed to hold an optical cable firmly in an optical connector. It must contain provisions for attachment to an optical connector.

CONNECTOR ASSEMBLY,FIBER OPTIC

Two or more ADAPTER, CONNECTOR, FIBER OPTIC; CONNECTOR, PLUG, FIBER OPTIC; and CONNECTOR, RECEPTACLE, FIBER OPTIC in any combination, having a common mounting or mounted on each other, each one capable of being independently replaced. For items furnished as mated pairs or sets, see CONNECTOR SET, FIBER OPTIC. Excludes CONNECTOR ASSEMBLY, ELECTRICAL.

ADAPTER,CONNECTOR,FIBER OPTIC

An adapter which provides facilities for joining two or more fiber optic connectors, which design or functions will not normally warrant their junction. It is not designed for permanent attachment to a fiber optic cable. The physical shape of a fiber optic connector should not be the determining factor of its name. Tee, angle, straight, and Y-shaped adapters are all ADAPTER (3), CONNECTOR, FIBER OPTIC. Excludes ADAPTER, CONNECTOR; ADAPTER, CONNECTOR TO LAMPBASE; ADAPTER, LAMPBASE TO CONNECTOR; ADAPTER, CABLE CLAMP TO CONNECTOR; and ADAPTER, LAMPHOLDER. See also COUPLER, FIBER OPTIC. A fiber optic fitting with or without contact(s) constructed to be affixed to the end of a fiber optic cable for convenience in joining with another fiber optic connector(s), and is not designed to be mounted on a bulkhead, chassis, or panel. It may or may not include facilities for holding a device, such as a semiconductor, but does not include the device itself. Excludes CONNECTOR, PLUG, ELECTRICAL; PLUG, TIP; DUMMY PLUG, TELEPHONE; DUMMY CONNECTOR, PLUG; INSERT, ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR; SOCKET, PLUG-IN ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS; JACK ASSEMBLY, TIP; PLUG ASSEMBLY TIP; and JACK TIP. It may or may not include facilities for holding a device, such as a semiconductor, but does not include the device itself. Excludes CONNECTOR, RECEPTACLE, ELECTRICAL; LAMPHOLDER; JACK, TELEPHONE; SOCKET (as modified); DUMMY CONNECTOR, RECEPTACLE; JACK ASSEMBLY, TIP; and PLUG ASSEMBLY, TIP. COUPLER,FIBER OPTIC

A component specifically designed to be inserted into an optical transmission line to provide a means for low-loss light energy branching, tapping, or signal mixing. It may be directional and/or bidirectional. All inputs and outputs are light energy. Excludes COUPLER, OPTOELECTRONIC, FIBER OPTIC. See also ADAPTER, CONNECTOR, FIBER OPTIC.

COUPLER,OPTOELECTRONIC,FIBER OPTIC

A device specifically designed to be inserted into an optical transmission line and coupled to one or more semiconductor type photosensitive elements all of which are contained in an opaque enclosure. Light input to the device by an external source acts upon the light sensor(s) to produce a corresponding output or change in some electrical quantity or variation in some electrical property. For items activated by an internal light source by application of an electrical input and having an electrical output, see COUPLER, OPTOELECTRONIC.

FERRULE,FIBER OPTIC CONDUCTOR

An item designed to be permanently fastened to the end of a fiber optic conductor in order to facilitate the insertion of the conductor into devices, such as splices, terminals, and connectors. Excludes FERRULE, ELECTRICAL CONDUCTOR.

CONTACT,FIBER OPTIC

SPLICER,FIBER OPTICS CONDUCTOR

An electro-mechanical, self-contained unit specifically designed to permanently join the ends of two optical fibers by fusion. It may also be used to install a protective heat-shrinkable tubing over the fused fibers. In addition to the fusion device, the unit may include an optical viewer, a fiber alignment device, a fiber cleaving device, and/or a means for illuminating the electrode area of the unit.

A device specifically designed to separate incoming optical power into pre-determined proportional values at its output connection. Includes splitters used in measuring the insertion loss and attenuation of passive optical components or to monitor power levels in single-mode/multimode fiber.

COUPLER,ROTARY,FIBER OPTIC

An item which provides a means of transfer of optical energy between two components or sets, and which is specifically designed to permit one section of an optical conductor to rotate continuously with respect to another, and still maintain light signal continuity.

COVER,FIBER OPTIC CONNECTOR

A device specifically designed to fully or partially inclose a fiber optic connector and protect its mating end from dust, moisture, mechanical or other damage. Excludes CAP, ELECTRICAL; CAP, PROTECTIVE, DUST AND MOISTURE SEAL; and COVER, ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR.

COLLAR,CABLE,FIBER OPTIC

A item designed to be affixed around a CABLE, FIBER OPTIC to limit the axial movement at the point where it passes through an opening. Excludes COLLAR, CABLE.

ADAPTER,FIBER OPTIC

A device used to adapt an element of a CABLE, FIBER OPTIC for attachment to a microscope. It is used during fabrication or repair to a CABLE, FIBER OPTIC to inspect the terminated end of the fiber or cable.

An item installed on a fiber optic connector for inseration protection.

BACKSHELL,FIBER OPTIC CONNECTOR

An item specifically designed to be placed around that portion of a CONNECTOR, RECEPTACLE, FIBER OPTIC and CONNECTOR, PLUG, FIBER OPTIC which contains the facilities for attaching fiber optic cable or wires. It may be designed to provide the necessary accommodations between a fiber optic cable clamping device and the fiber optic connector shell or may include the clamping device.

MASK,OPTICAL INSTRUMENT

A thin metallic or nonmetallic plate which has an opening of a specific size. Its function is to limit the field of view of a telescope, periscope or the like by blocking peripheral light or images. Excludes MASK, LANTERN SLIDE, PHOTOGRAPHIC.

PLATE POLISHING,FIBER OPTICS

A round, rectangular or square shaped metal item. By comparison its thickness is less than its length, width, or diameter. The polishing area is covered with replaceable polishing paper. It is to produce a smooth surface, on fiber optic terminations.

ALIGNMENT FIXTURE,FIBER OPTIC CONDUCTOR

A device designed to align the joining elements of a fiber optic splice.

ALIGNMENT FIXTURE,FIBER OPTIC CABLE

A device designed to align the joining elements of a CABLE ASSEMBLY, FIBER OPTIC during the termination process.

A collection of items used to repair/replace electro-optic terminations/devices of a fiber optic system or subsystem.

A collection of items used in splicing a fiber optic cable. It may include splice modules, tweezers, microscope, adhesive, and a portable light source; as well as tools for cutting and splicing and a carrying case.

A collection of items used to organize fiber splices. Includes housing, splicing tray and hardware. Provides mechanical protection; may or may not provide environmental protection.

RECEIVER-TRANSMITTER SET,LIGHT SIGNAL

A fixed number of components and/or items, such as optical connectors, electrical connectors, adapters, and the like which together perform the functions of receiving and transmitting light signals through an optical conductor.

INTERCONNECTING BOX

An inclosure which includes mounts and protects such items as switches, circuit breakers, jacks, fuseholders, connectors, terminals and/or terminal boards, resistors, capacitors, transformers, and the like. It is primarily designed to interconnect two or more electrical and/or electronic items, except primary power source(s) such as generator(s) and battery(ies). It may include a cover or door.
